How it Works

How It Works

The Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is designed to provide a thorough and personalised evaluation of your current level of function across all domains of daily life. The FCA aims to assist you in accessing the NDIS, obtaining additional funding, or adapting to any changes in your circumstances. During this process, you will work closely with an Occupational Therapist (OT), who will conduct a detailed assessment tailored to your unique needs. In collaboration with your relevant stakeholders, the efforts of the OT will help the NDIS gain insight into the support you need and how they can effectively assist you.

  • What areas are covered in an FCA?
Physical Capabilities: This involves evaluating a person's mobility, strength, endurance, and range of motion. The OT observes how the individual manages tasks like walking, lifting objects, and transferring between positions. Social Engagement: The assessment includes how well the individual interacts with others and participates in social or community activities. It also looks at how they maintain personal relationships. Environmental Considerations: The assessment also looks at the individual's home and community environment, noting any necessary adjustments or equipment to enhance safety and accessibility. Cognitive Skills: Cognitive functions like memory, attention span, problem-solving, and decision-making are assessed. This helps gauge how any cognitive challenges might affect everyday life. Daily Living Skills: Assessing essential daily activities such as dressing, personal hygiene, bathing, and using the toilet. This helps determine how much assistance, if any, is needed in these areas. Leisure and Social Participation: The person’s involvement in hobbies, sports, or social activities is evaluated to identify any barriers they may face and to suggest solutions that could improve participation. Level of Communication: The OT will look at how the person communicates, both verbally and non-verbally, and whether any communication aids are being used or required. Work-Related Tasks: The assessor evaluates the person’s ability to perform tasks specific to their job. This could involve physically demanding duties such as lifting or operating equipment, or tasks in an office setting like typing, walking, or standing.
  • How are the assessment sessions structured?
The OT will generally need 3x 60-minute sessions to conduct all necessary interviews, observations and standardised assessments. After these sessions have been completed, the OT will then compile all information and interpret all assessment results into a detailed report.
  • What's included in an FCA report?
The OT's aim when writing the FCA report is to address and outline the following: Your strengths; Your limitations and difficulties that are a barrier or have an impact on your ability to perform tasks independently; Provide guidance to NDIS planners and your family on the supports needed for a new NDIS plan, along with considerations for future planning; Suggest strategies and supports, including recommendations for the number of support hours or necessary equipment within an NDIS plan
  • Who needs to be present with me during assessment sessions?
It is important for the individual being assessed to have other another support person present during the assessment sessions. This support person can be a family member, carer, or someone who knows you well. This will ensure all information obtained throughout the assessment process is accurate, and ensure you supported and comfortable throughout the process.
  • How do I attend the appointments?
Our services are all offered online, meaning you just need a computer, laptop or tablet to attend the sessions. The device you choose must have a camera, so yourself and the OT can see each other. You will simply be emailed a link to access our sessions over Google Meets.
  • Can FCAs be done via Telehealth?
Absolutely! Depending on the nature of your impairment, most FCAs can be successfully and comprehensively conducted via Telehealth. Telehealth is proving to be significantly more convenient and accessible for many individuals, as well as efficient. In some situations, the individual may require someone present in-person with specific expertise or equipment, such as those who need major home safety/modification assessments or driving assessments.
  • When can I expect to receive my FCA report?
Following the completion of all assessments sessions, you can expect to receive your completed report within 7 business days.
  • Who can access this service?
We are accepting referrals and bookings for both NDIS participants and private clients of all ages, over 7 years of age. Redeem OT is not an NDIS-registered business, therefore cannot take on NDIA-managed participants. All participants who are self-managed or plan-managed under the NDIS qualify for our services.
  • Does Redeem OT provide other assessments or services?

Testimonials

Claudio A.

I wanted to express my gratitude to Redeem OT for the professionalism shown in providing a Functional Capacity Assessment Report. Our OT was sensitive to the challenges of the client in gathering relevant information and genuinely made time to listen and understand what was being said. The process was never rushed, and the standard of their report and its timeliness was fantastic. I would highly recommend redeem OT.
